Payment Fraud

Authorised Push Payment (APP) Fraud Reimbursement Scheme

What is APP Fraud?

APP (Authorised Push Payment) fraud happens when a scammer tricks you into sending money to them, thinking you're sending it to the right person. This could happen through payments like Faster Payments or CHAPS out of your savings account.

How Can we Help you

From October 7, 2024, if you fall victim to APP fraud, we could help refund your money. You must meet certain conditions to get a refund, such as reporting it quickly.

Who Can Get a Refund?

You may be eligible for a refund if:

  • The payment was made using Faster Payments or CHAPS within the UK.
  • The payment was made on or after October 7, 2024.
  • You followed safety steps, like checking for warnings about scams.

Limits on Refunds

You can claim a refund which is set by the regulator and subject to change. However, payments made outside the UK or through cash or cheques aren’t eligible.

When we Can’t Refund you

  • You ignored warnings about possible fraud.
  • You knowingly helped the scammer.
  • You waited more than 13 months to report the fraud.
  • The issue is a disagreement with someone else (like a family member)
  • You paid more than needed, which wasn’t part of the fraud.

What to Do if you Suspect Fraud

  1. Stop and Think: If someone is rushing you to send money, take a moment to think about it.
  2. Check the Sender: Call the person or company using their official contact info (not from the message).
  3. Report it Quickly: Tell us as soon as you can so we can help you.

How to Stay Safe

  • Always think carefully before making any payment.
  • Look for fraud warnings we might send you.
  • Check your accounts regularly for anything unusual.
