Building Financial Futures with Sporting Stars Academy

At Hanley Economic Building Society, we believe that financial education is one of the most valuable life skills young people can develop. That's why we're delighted to have officially begun our partnership with Sporting Stars Academy as part of our Building Financial Futures programme.
Recently, we welcomed four students from Sporting Stars Academy to our Head Office for the first of a series of interactive financial education sessions. The students showed fantastic enthusiasm, curiosity, and engagement throughout the day, making for a brilliant start to the partnership.
Our First Session
The opening session focused on helping students understand some of the key financial decisions they may face in later life. Together, we explored topics including:
- What a mortgage is and how it works
- The differences between renting and homeownership
- The responsibilities that come with managing a home
- The costs involved in housing and everyday living
- Questions about personal finance and future financial goals
The students asked thoughtful questions and contributed openly to discussions, demonstrating a genuine interest in understanding how financial decisions can impact their future.
What's Coming Next?
This first session marks the beginning of an exciting programme, with a further two sessions already planned and more opportunities for collaboration in the future.
Upcoming sessions will cover a range of practical money management topics, including:
- Budgeting and managing everyday expenses
- Understanding payslips and deductions
- The importance of saving regularly
- Debit cards versus credit cards
- Building positive financial habits
- Making informed financial decisions
- Additional modules from our Building Financial Futures programme
These sessions are designed to equip students with the confidence and knowledge they need to navigate real-world financial situations and prepare for adulthood.
Supporting the Next Generation
Financial education is about more than numbers. It's about building confidence, encouraging informed decision-making, and helping young people feel prepared for the future. Through our Building Financial Futures programme, we aim to make finance accessible, engaging, and relevant to everyday life.
Seeing the students actively participate, share their thoughts, and ask questions during the first session was incredibly rewarding. Their enthusiasm highlights the value of providing practical financial education in a supportive environment.
We look forward to welcoming the students back for the next sessions and continuing to work alongside Sporting Stars Academy to help inspire and empower the next generation with essential financial skills.
We can't wait to see what they achieve as their financial knowledge and confidence continue to grow.
