Cash ISA changes: what’s happening?

There has been plenty of discussion around changes to Cash ISAs and how much savers will be able to pay into them from April 2027.
Plans had previously been announced to reduce the annual Cash ISA subscription limit to £12,000 for savers under 65. However, following the Autumn Budget in October 2026, the Government announced that this planned reduction would no longer go ahead. [ii.co.uk], [moneysavin...expert.com]
So, what does this mean for Cash ISA savers? Here's what we know.
What was due to change?
Previous plans would have reduced the amount savers under 65 could subscribe to Cash ISAs from £20,000 to £12,000 per tax year from 6 April 2027.
The overall annual ISA subscription limit would have remained £20,000, meaning affected savers would have needed to use other eligible types of ISA if they wanted to use the remainder of their annual ISA allowance. [gov.uk]
Savers aged 65 and over were due to retain the ability to subscribe up to £20,000 into Cash ISAs. [gov.uk]
What has changed following the Autumn Budget?
The Government has now announced that the planned reduction in the Cash ISA limit will not go ahead.
This means the Cash ISA limit will remain at £20,000 per tax year for eligible savers of all ages, rather than reducing to £12,000 for those under 65 from April 2027. [ii.co.uk], [moneysavin...expert.com]
For Cash ISA savers, this means the previously announced age-based distinction will no longer apply under the Government's revised plans. [moneysavin...expert.com]
What does this mean for savers?
For eligible Cash ISA savers, the main message is simple: the previously announced £12,000 Cash ISA limit is no longer due to come into effect from April 2027. [moneysavin...expert.com]
Savers will continue to be able to subscribe up to the applicable annual ISA allowance into a Cash ISA, subject to ISA rules and eligibility.
If you've previously read about a £12,000 Cash ISA limit from April 2027, this relates to the plans announced before the October 2026 Autumn Budget.
Is the overall ISA allowance changing?
The information available following the Autumn Budget states that savers will continue to be able to put up to £20,000 into a Cash ISA each tax year, rather than being restricted to £12,000 from April 2027. [global.mor...ngstar.com], [moneysavin...expert.com]

Do I need to do anything?
There is no requirement to take action simply because the previously announced Cash ISA reduction has been reversed.
However, it is always worth understanding the current ISA rules, your annual allowance and the terms and conditions of any ISA you hold.
