Helping People with Sight Loss Live Independently: Hanley at Home Fund Supports A Local Charity

We’re proud to support Staffordshire Sight Loss Association with a £5,000 grant from the Hanley at Home Fund, helping deliver their vital Independent Living Service across North Staffordshire.

Empowering Independence

Staffordshire Sight Loss Association is a community-led charity founded in 2018. Their mission is to empower people living with sight loss to lead independent, fulfilling lives. Through specialist advice, peer support, and practical help, they ensure people can access the tools and guidance they need.

A key part of their work is the Independent Living Service, which offers one-to-one, in-home support tailored to individual needs. This makes it accessible to those with mobility challenges and ensures help is provided where it’s needed most.

What the Service Provides

The service supports people with everyday tasks, helps them access specialist equipment like magnifiers and talking kitchen tools, and assists with applications for grants for essential items such as fridges or cookers. It also offers guidance on welfare rights, housing, and concessions like Blue Badges and bus passes, while encouraging social connections and hobbies.

This holistic approach helps people maintain independence, improve wellbeing, and feel more connected to their communities.

Making a Real Difference

Our £5,000 grant will help fund staff costs from July 2025 to June 2026, including a part-time Independent Living Coordinator and two trained volunteers-one specialising in assistive equipment and the other in benefits support.

The project is expected to benefit over 270 people, with an estimated cost of just £18 per person-a small investment with a life-changing impact.

This builds on previous funding the charity received through the VCSE Supportive Communities and Better Health programme in 2024, which supported the same service from November 2024 to March 2025.

Why It Matters

Sight loss can be overwhelming, and many people don’t know where to turn. Without support, it’s easy to feel isolated. The Independent Living Service helps people regain control, confidence, and dignity-allowing them to live independently in their own homes.

By supporting this initiative, we’re helping people stay safe, supported, and connected.
